96 PERCENT OF RECALLED TOYS MADE IN CHINA June 30, 2007

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) wants Congress to hold hearings to, as her office put it, “investigate reports of unsafe toys coming from China.”

There’s no need for much investigating. The government’s own figures clearly indicate that of the 72 toys and children’s clothing and jewelry items recalled so far this year, 69 came from China. (See list below)

Korea, the Philippines and Bangladesh contributed one each. One item, an Evenflo infant seat, was manufactured jointly in the U.S. and China.

The numbers come from a ConsumerAffairs.Com analysis of the recalls conducted so far this year by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Recalls are listed on the agency’s Web site and in the ConsumerAffairs.Com recall section.

Recalled items this year are similar to those in previous years — children’s clothing with dangerous drawstrings, toys with parts that can become detached and choke infants and tiny magnets that can cause intestinal obstructions if swallowed.

This year’s recall roster also includes several items of children’s jewelry that contain excessive amounts of lead, as well as toys painted with lead-based paint.

PUBLIC GAGS AT QUEER-FEST June 29, 2007

“ How can you tell a guy is home gay? Cuz his d*** tastes like s****!” –Jon Stewart, The Daily Show

2006 St. Petersburg ‘gay’ fest (Courtesy: St.Petersburg Times)

St. Petersburg, Fla., officials are sticking with plans to limit free speech at the city’s homosexual festival this weekend, after fighting off complaints they are creating unconstitutional “free speech zones.” Instead, the city will be limiting some signs and banners to an area “adjacent to the Permitted Street Closure Area.”

The issue is that generally, court opinions have held “free speech zones” do not meet requirements of the First Amendment.

So the city is no longer calling the area a “free speech zone,” although it still is marked as the “FSZ” location on an event map.

But according to a permit for the weekend’s events, those who wish to use “amplified sound and/or hand held signs and banners that extend beyond the torso of the person holding them,” and “signs/banners on sticks, or other rigid objects,” will be relegated to a designated area “adjacent” to the actual event area.

“The forgoing,” insists the permit, “is not to be considered a limitation on individuals using any area outside of the Permitted Street Closure to exercise their First Amendment rights in any lawful manner.” READ MORE HERE

DIAL-A-FINK TO BE SETUP IN OTSEGO June 29, 2007

ED NOTES: Now it’s even easier to drop a dime on a con in the county, with Dial-A-Fink.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Department is starting a telephone and e-mail tips line to streamline how it receives information from the public.

Checking out tips from the public is an important part of investigative work, Sheriff Richard Devlin Jr. said.

But when people call the sheriff’s department, they get a dispatcher who is trained to glean as much information about the caller and the situation as possible.

This, Devlin said, could scare away people who may have useful information.

The e-mail address and the phone number will be set up in such a way that tips can be given anonymously, he explained. STORY LINK

    COMPLETE DETAILS AND ENTIRE LIST

While this list is far from exhaustive, it hits the trouble spots we’ve heard most about. Of course, all used cars are potential trouble. If you can swing it, it’s better to buy a new model, even if you get one that’s stripped down. With gas prices higher than ever, most of us would be better off with a small four-cylinder sedan, preferably with a manual transmission.

One last word of caution: While the Internet is a valuable place to research cars, it’s a terrible place to buy them. You should only buy a car you have examined in person. Ideally, you should take it to an experienced mechanic for a complete inspection. Whatever you do, never buy a car sight unseen on the Web. You’re likely to get a flood car, or something even worse.

SCOTUS: RACE BASED SCHOOL ADMISSIONS ILLEGAL June 28, 2007

ED NOTES: It’s about time school admissions were based on one’s scholarship and character, rather than the color of one’s skin. Fair is fair.  Al Czervic

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected school diversity plans that take account of students’ race in two major public school districts but left the door open for using race in limited circumstances.

The decision in cases affecting schools in Louisville, Ky., and Seattle could imperil similar plans in hundreds of districts nationwide, and it further restricts how public school systems may attain racial diversity.

The court split, 5-4, with Chief Justice John Roberts announcing the court’s judgment. The court’s four liberal justices dissented. MORE HERE

    ROMNEY: IT’S JUST A DOG–NOT AUNT EDNA June 28, 2007

    Posted by Commentator in Uncategorized.

ED NOTES: What kind of a person schmucko would strap a dog to the roof of a car and drive 12 hours from Boston to Ontario? MITT-O WAS HIS NAME-0. From TIME Magazine..

The incident: dog excrement found on the roof and windows of the Romney station wagon. How it got there: Romney strapped a dog carrier — with the family dog Seamus, an Irish Setter, in it — to the roof of the family station wagon for a twelve hour drive from Boston to Ontario, which the family apparently completed, despite Seamus’s rather visceral protest.

Massachusetts’s animal cruelty laws specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal “in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise, in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner or in a way and manner which might endanger the animal carried thereon.”

An officer for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responded to a description of the situation saying “it’s definitely something I’d want to check out.” The officer, Nadia Branca, declined to give a definitive opinion on whether Romney broke the law but did note that it’s against state law to have a dog in an open bed of a pick-up truck, and “if the dog was being carried in a way that endangers it, that would be illegal.”

And while it appears that the statute of limitations has probably passed, Stacey Wolf, attorney and legislative director for the ASPCA, said “even if it turns out to not be against the law at the time, in the district, we’d hope that people would use common sense…” READ MORE HERE

    MORE ROMNEY STUPIDITY:

In Massachusetts he bucked the National Rifle Association by supporting the Brady Bill and an assault-weapons ban, boasting, “I don’t line up with the N.R.A.” Lately what he brags about is that he joined the gun-rights organization as a life member — last August. Romney has been so eager to prove his Second Amendment bona fides that he boasted in New Hampshire, “I’ve been a hunter pretty much all my life.” But then his campaign admitted he had actually hunted only twice, once as a teenager and then last year, on a trip with G.O.P. donors. That was followed by still more clarification: Romney insisted he has hunted small animals for many years, though he does not actually own a firearm. “Leave it to Mitt Romney to shoot himself in the foot with a gun he doesn’t own,” wrote Boston Globe columnist Joan Vennochi.

    READ EVEN MORE HERE

ED NOTES: Maybe some sharp-eyed trooper will discover a leash hanging from the bumper with a dog collar attached to it. Maybe Ole Mitt needs to be taken for a 12 hour ride in a cage atop a station wagon in the blazing heat, just to see how HE likes it.  One thing’s for sure — this azzclown needs a public flogging for this incredibly stupid move.

Oh we really need this macaroon running the country. Like we need another Kennedy or Clinton. NOT!  –Carl Spackler

BRITAIN FAKES CRIME REPORTS June 28, 2007

Peaceful Britain has been cooking the crime statistics for years. Millions of violent crimes not recorded due to reporting cap. Hows that gun control thing really working out for you there guys?

An extra two million violent crimes a year are committed in Britain than previously thought because of a bizarre distortion in the Government’s flagship crime figures, it was claimed yesterday.

A former Home Office research expert said that across all types of crime, three million offences a year are excluded from the British Crime Survey (BCS).

The poll caps the number of times a victim can be targeted by an offender at five incidents a year.

The authors of a report by think-tank Civitas said the five-crimes limit is ” truly bizarre” and “misleading”.

Professor Graham Farrell of Loughborough University and the former acting head of the Home Office’s Police Research Group, Professor Ken Pease, calculated that if the cap is ignored, the overall number of BCS crimes is more than 14 million rather than the current 11 million a year estimate.

Violent crime is 82 per cent higher at 4.4 million offences compared with 2.4 million in the BCS, the survey claims, including a 156 per cent rise in ” acquaintance violence” from 817,000 incidents to 2.1 million.

Domestic violence is 140 per cent higher, up from 357,000 incidents a year to 857,000, the authors said, while there are nearly three million common assaults a year rather than the 1.5 million estimated by the BCS, a rise of 98 per cent.

LATEST GUN GRAB TACTIC-SHUT DOWN STORES June 27, 2007

    add a comment

The government is using paperwork errors as small as the abbreviation of a city name to shut down some of the nation’s longest-serving gun shops, and 2nd Amendment advocates fear the right to bear arms will mean little if there’s no way to obtain a gun.

“No good deed goes unpunished,” Larry Pratt, of Gun Owners of America, told WND while confirming that as recently as 15 or 20 years ago, there were 250,000 licensed gun dealers in the United States.

Today, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told WND, there are 108,381, and if more cases involving dealers such as Red’s Trading Post of Twin Falls, Idaho, develop, that number will plummet quickly.

Ryan Horsley, a spokesman for Red’s, which has been in business 71 years, said the store has been battling over its license because of rules infractions such as a missing poster for more than six years.

    Red’s manager Ryan Horsley

He’s launched an online petition asking Congress to intervene and halt the “blatant targeting of law abiding dealers.” It also seeks a “fair, constitutional and speedy appeals process” and has attracted thousands of signatures.

His company also has a federal lawsuit pending against the ATF over its announcement that Red’s firearms dealership license was being withdrawn.

Attorney Mark Geston said the case asks the court to review the statute and the “propriety” of the decision that was made. READ MORE HERE

Horsley said the reason Red’s is facing a revocation is – at most – insignificant paperwork mistakes.

RUDY SLAMS SLICK WILLY ON TERRORISM June 27, 2007

Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani on Tuesday accused former President Clinton of not responding forcefully enough to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing or later terrorist attacks.

The former New York mayor criticized Democrats, accusing them of weakness and naivete in dealing with terrorism.

“Islamic terrorists killed more than 500 Americans before Sept. 11. Many people think the first attack on America was on Sept. 11, 2001. It was not. It was in 1993,” said the former New York mayor.

Giuliani argued that Clinton treated the World Trade Center bombing as a criminal act instead of a terrorist attack, calling it “a big mistake” that emboldened other strikes on the Khobar Towers housing complex in Saudi Arabia, in Kenya and Tanzania and later on the USS Cole while docked in Yemen in 2000.

“The United States government, then President Clinton, did not respond,” Giuliani said. “(Osama) bin Laden declared war on us. We didn’t hear it.”

In hindsight, Giuliani said, maybe it’s all clearer now, “but now is now, and there is no reason to go back into denial, and that is essentially what the Democratic candidates for president want to do: they want to go back, to put the country in reverse to the 1990s. STORY LINK

A town of Maryland man was charged with a felony Tuesday for alleged sexually explicit Internet chats with a Connecticut police officer posing as a 14-year-old boy.

William Everette Sternberg, 58, was arrested on a charge of attempted first-degree disseminating indecent materials to minors, a class E felony punishable by up to four years in prison.

“He was chatting in a Yahoo chat room with who he thought was a 14-year-old boy,” said Investigator Michael Ten Eyck of the Otsego County Sheriff’s Department.

During the chats, Sternberg discussed traveling to Connecticut or having the 14-year-old boy come to New York in order for the two to have sex, Ten Eyck said.

Sternberg was convicted of second-degree sodomy in Otsego County in 1982 for contact with a 16-year-old boy who lived at the same Maryland home Sternberg is living in today, Muehl said Tuesday night. READ MORE HERE

NEVADA COLLEGE PLANS TO ARM STAFF June 26, 2007

The University of Nevada system is one step closer to letting professors, faculty and staff carry guns on campus.

The Board of Regents plan would allow faculty take a 21-week course in Carson City. That class would cost more than $3,000 per person and the universities would pick up the tab. But it would use a legal loophole to essentially deputize the employee. That way they wouldn’t break the law.

Right now it’s a Class E felony to carry a gun on campus. And if the unthinkable happens on campus, these students want the real officers to be on the front lines. The plan will come up for a final vote later in the summer. Campus police also presented their changes for an active shooter scenario.

CHEAP CHINA TIRES BLOW June 26, 2007

Cheap Chinese tires missing a safety feature are blamed for a fatal traffic accident, according to a lawsuit in New Jersey that warns as many as 450,000 light truck tires may need to be recalled.

A gum strip that helps prevent separation of steel belts might have been omitted in tires manufactured by China’s Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. and imported by Foreign Tire Sales Inc., of Union, N.J., reported ConsumerAffairs.com

The tires were sold under the names Westlake, Telluride, Compass and YKS.

“This is a prime example of a private lawsuit with a substantial public benefit,” said Jeffrey B. Killino, an attorney with Woloshin & Killino, which represents the families of the deceased and injured. “The Hangzhou Rubber Company deliberately and secretly removed a safety feature from these tires and two young men died as a direct result. This was a tragedy that didn’t have to happen, but hopefully we can prevent future fatal crashes.”

The lawsuit, filed by Foreign Tire Sales Inc., or FTS, charges tread separation caused a cargo van carrying four passengers to crash in Pennsylvania Aug.12, 2006, killing two passengers and injuring the other two, ConsumerAffairs.com reported.

FTS, noting other American distributors might also have been selling the tires, warns a recall may be necessary, estimating a million or more tires involved.

FTS began noticing an abnormal number of complaints from consumers a few years ago. After an ambulance crash in May 2006, the company examined the blown tire that caused it and said it found the Chinese manufacturer had failed to include the 0.6 mm gum strip between the belts.  READ MORE HERE

    Over unethical conduct! Go figure!

A Spokane, Wash., newspaper has dropped “The Ethicist” column of New York Times writer Randy Cohen after an MSNBC investigation reported that he had donated money to the the liberal group MoveOn.org.

According to the New York Post, the Spokane Spokesman-Review was scheduled to run Cohen’s nationally syndicated column in Sunday’s editions, but dropped the idea after learning of the payments.

“It would by hypocritical of us to run an ethics column by a journalist in violation of our own ethics policy,” Spokesman-Review editor Steven Smith wrote online.

“Had he been a Spokesman-Review staff member, he would have faced suspension, at least . . . So we’re dropping the column. We’ll look elsewhere for a publishable ethicist.” STORY LINK

Do Teachers Have a Lot to Learn?

    • Between 1990 and 2004, 94 percent of donations made by National Education Association political action committees and individual officers went to Democrats, according to OpenSecrets.org. According to the NEA’s own “Status of the American Public School Teacher 2000-2001,” only 45 percent of public school teachers are Democrats.
    • A Wall Street Journal editorial revealed that the National Education Association — the nation’s largest teachers union — “is spending the mandatory dues paid by members who are told their money will be used to gain better wages, benefits and working conditions. According to the latest filing, member dues accounted for $295 million of the NEA’s $341 million in total receipts last year. But the union spent $25 million of that on ‘political activities and lobbying’ and another $65.5 million on ‘contributions, gifts and grants’ that seemed designed to further those hyper-liberal political goals.”
    • The Journal added that the NEA’s financial disclosure forms “expose the union as a honey pot for left-wing political causes that have nothing to do with teachers, much less students.”

Jesse Jackson was arrested Saturday at a demonstration outside a south suburban gun shop and charged with one count of criminal trespass.

Jackson was arrested when he refused to move away from the entrance to Chuck’s Gun Shop in Riverdale, police said. He has protested with other community activists outside the shop in recent weeks after a 16-year-old honour student was gunned down on a city bus.

Police said the shooting was gang-related but the teen was not the intended target.

Jackson, who says the gun shop’s proximity to Chicago provides gang members and criminals easy access to firearms, has used the protests to call for stricter gun laws.

Rev. Michael Pfleger, a Catholic priest who oversees a South Side congregation, also was arrested and charged with Jackson.

ROMNEY AIDE IMPERSONATING COP? June 23, 2007

State Police are investigating one of Mitt Romney’s top campaign aides for allegedly impersonating a trooper by calling a Wilmington company and threatening to cite the driver of a company van for erratic driving, according to two law enforcement sources familiar with the probe.

Jay Garrity, who is director of operations on Romney’s presidential campaign and a constant presence at his side, became the primary target of the investigation, according to one of the sources, after authorities traced the cellphone used to make the call back to him. The investigation comes three years after Garrity, while working for Romney in the State House, was cited for having flashing lights and other police equipment in his car without proper permits.

The New Hampshire attorney general, according to the Associated Press, has also opened an investigation into a report that a Romney aide, later identified as Garrity, pulled over a New York Times reporter in New Hampshire and said he had run his license plate.

In the phone call to the Wilmington company, which was recorded by an answering service and obtained by the Globe, a man who identifies himself as “Trooper Garrity with the Massachusetts State Police” complains about the driving of a van owned by Wayne’s Drains Middlesex Sewers of Wilmington. The caller repeatedly says he is a trooper and questions when the driver will return to the office.

“I’m going to get the address of your company,” the caller says during the May 13 call. “I’m going to come down to your company. I’m going to personally issue this driver a citation for both speeding, driving erratic, cutting across.”

“The whole thing was just hinky,” said Wayne Barme, owner of the Wilmington drain and sewer cleaning company, whose wife, Dot, contacted State Police after receiving the complaint. READ MORE HERE

MILE DIAMETER UFO SEEN BY BRIT PILOT, CREW June 22, 2007

One of the largest UFOs ever seen has been observed by the crew and passengers of an airliner over the Channel Islands.

An official air-miss report on the incident several weeks ago appears in Pilot magazine.

Aurigny Airlines captain Ray Bowyer, 50, flying close to Alderney first spotted the object, described as “a cigar-shaped brilliant white light”.

As the plane got closer the captain viewed it through binoculars and said: “It was a very sharp, thin yellow object with a green area.

“It was 2,000ft up and stationary. I thought it was about 10 miles away, although I later realised it was approximately 40 miles from us. At first, I thought it was the size of a [Boeing] 737.

“But it must have been much bigger because of how far away it was. It could have been as much as a mile wide.”

Continuing his approach to Guernsey, Bowyer then spied a “second identical object further to the west”.

He said: “It was exactly the same but looked smaller because it was further away. It was closer to Guernsey. I can’t explain it. This was clearly visual for about nine minutes.

“I’m certainly not saying that it was something of another world. All I’m saying is that I have never seen anything like it before in all my years of flying.”

The sightings were confirmed by passengers Kate and John Russell. John, 74, said: “I saw an orange light. It was like an elongated oval.”

The sightings were also confirmed by an unnamed pilot with the Blue Islands airline. READ MORE HERE

NADER: HILLARY IS ‘COWARD’-PREPARES TO RUN June 22, 2007

“She is a political coward,” he said. “She goes around pandering to powerful interest groups on the one hand and flattering general audiences on the other.

“She doesn’t even have the minimal political fortitude of her husband.”

In what could be a looming nightmare for Democrats, Ralph Nader said he is seriously considering running for president again in 2008 – calling front-runner Hillary Clinton a “political coward.”

“The two parties are still converging,” he declared in an interview with Roger Simon of politico.com.

“I really think there needs to be more competition from outside the two parties . . .

“What third parties can do is bring young people in, set standards on how to run a presidential election and keep the progressive agenda in front of the people. And maybe tweak a candidate here and there in the major parties.” STORY LINK

GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul has been excluded from an upcoming political forum in Iowa on the grounds that he is not a “credible” candidate.

The event, sponsored by Iowans for Tax Relief and the Iowa Christian Alliance, is set for June 30 in Des Moines.

GOP candidates who will speak at the forum include Mitt Romney, Sam Brownback, Duncan Hunter, Mike Huckabee, Tommy Thompson and Tom Tancredo.

But Paul, a Texas congressman, was left out because the invitation went only to those candidates who are “credible,” said Ed Failor Jr., vice president of Iowans for Tax Relief. READ MORE HERE

ABORTIONIST LAWMAKER CONVICTED June 22, 2007

A state representative who earlier was convicted of battery and fined $100 for an attack on a pro-life protester who donned a cockroach costume for a gubernatorial debate in 2006 now is being sued by the protester.

Bryan J. Brown, executive director of the ArchAngel Institute is representing Troy Newman, the chief of Operation Rescue in his claim against state Rep. Vaughn Flora, D-Topeka.

The civil action was sparked by Flora’s attack on Newman last September as Newman was protesting a gubernatorial debate at the Kansas State Fair. Flora pleaded no contest and was convicted of battery. One of the candidates was now-current Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a strong abortion supporter.

Specifically, Newman was protesting Sebelius’ veto of minimum health standards for abortion mills.

Flora, who had been seated with those who supported Sebelius, “quickly approached” Newman, and “struck plaintiff no less than twice about the head and face in full view of many attending the debate.”

The attack, the lawsuit said, “was extreme, malicious, forcible, outrageous, oppressive and unlawful.”

A two-inch wound resulted, and Newman still carries the scar on his face as a result, the lawsuit said. STORY LINK

SHOCKER: JOURNALISTS GIVE CASH TO DEMS OVER REPUBS 9-1 June 21, 2007

    Posted by Commentator in Uncategorized.

LIST OF 144 DONORS FROM THE PRESS TO DEMS:

A CNN reporter gave $500 to John Kerry’s campaign the same month he was embedded with the U.S. Army in Iraq. An assistant managing editor at Forbes magazine not only sent $2,000 to Republicans, but also volunteers as a director of an ExxonMobil-funded group that questions global warming. A junior editor at Dow Jones Newswires gave $1,036 to the liberal group MoveOn.org and keeps a blog listing “people I don’t like,” starting with George Bush, Pat Robertson, the Christian Coalition, the NRA and corporate America (”these are the people who are really in charge”).

Whether you sample your news feed from ABC or CBS (or, yes, even NBC and MSNBC), whether you prefer Fox News Channel or National Public Radio, The Wall Street Journal or The New Yorker, some of the journalists feeding you are also feeding cash to politicians, parties or political action committees.

MSNBC.com identified 144 journalists who made political contributions from 2004 through the start of the 2008 campaign, according to the public records of the Federal Election Commission. Most of the newsroom checkbooks leaned to the left: 125 journalists gave to Democrats and liberal causes. Only 17 gave to Republicans. Two gave to both parties.

The donors include CNN’s Guy Raz, now covering the Pentagon for NPR, who gave to Kerry the same month he was embedded with U.S. troops in Iraq; New Yorker war correspondent George Packer; a producer for Bill O’Reilly at Fox; MSNBC TV host Joe Scarborough; political writers at Vanity Fair; the editor of The Wall Street Journal’s weekend edition; local TV anchors in Washington, Minneapolis, Memphis and Wichita; the ethics columnist at The New York Times; and even MTV’s former presidential campaign correspondent.

‘If someone had murdered Hitler …’
There’s a longstanding tradition that journalists don’t cheer in the press box. They have opinions, like anyone else, but they are expected to keep those opinions out of their work. Because appearing to be fair is part of being fair, most mainstream news organizations discourage marching for causes, displaying political bumper stickers or giving cash to candidates.

Traditionally, many news organizations have applied the rules to only political reporters and editors. The ethic was summed up by Abe Rosenthal, the former New York Times editor, who is reported to have said, “I don’t care if you sleep with elephants as long as you don’t cover the circus.”

But with polls showing the public losing faith in the ability of journalists to give the news straight up, some major newspapers and TV networks are clamping down. They now prohibit all political activity — aside from voting — no matter whether the journalist covers baseball or proofreads the obituaries. The Times in 2003 banned all donations, with editors scouring the FEC records regularly to watch for in-house donors. In 2005, The Chicago Tribune made its policy absolute. CBS did the same last fall. And The Atlantic Monthly, where a senior editor gave $500 to the Democratic Party in 2004, says it is considering banning all donations. After MSNBC.com contacted Salon.com about donations by a reporter and a former executive editor, this week Salon banned donations for all its staff.
