But probably the most important point from an underdog - maybe the most important point made by any candidate - came from Dennis Kucinich, who said he not only favored lowered the drinking age to 18, but the voting age to 16. I seriously support such a lowering of the voting age - I’ve been saying for years that it should be lowered to 14 - an age at which, according cognitive psychologist Jean Piaget, people have completely adult reasoning processes, and have had them for at least two years.

A gay police officer has filed a discrimination suit against the city and the New York Police Department, saying he was threatened with violence, called vulgar names and treated unfairly by supervisors because of his sexuality.

The lawsuit was filed by Michael Harrington, 30, who claimed his superior officers failed to take proper action when he told them about the malicious and discriminatory mistreatment he suffered.

“The hell he’s gone through is heart wrenching,” said Harrington’s lawyer, George D. Rosenbaum.

Connie Pankratz, spokeswoman for the city’s Law Department, said the city had not seen the lawsuit and could not comment

Harrington, a police officer since July 2002, says in court papers he disclosed to another officer at the 75th Precinct in the East New York section of Brooklyn in February 2003 that he was gay, and that was the beginning of his problems with co-workers.

Harrington, of Brooklyn, said in the suit that within months he overheard an officer in the men’s room referring to him as a “faggot.” Harrington spoke to the officer who said he would hurt Harrington if he confronted the officer again. STORY LINK

A father was charged with beating up his daughter’s boyfriend last week after learning the two had sex. Now, police are preparing to charge the boy with sexual assault.

The 17-year-old boy from Henniker, who admitted to having sex with his 15-year-old girlfriend, will “absolutely” be charged, police said.

Weare Detective Lou Chatel said the boy will be charged as an adult and could face up to a year in jail.
Both teens admitted to having sex during school hours on Sept. 10, but off school property, Chatel said.

 That afternoon, he said, the girl’s father went to John Stark Regional High School and attacked the boy.
School had just let out and the parking lot was filled with students and parents.

The boy suffered cuts and bruises and received two stitches to his face. The father was charged with simple assault.
It all began that morning when the girl did not show up for her first class, even though she had been seen at school.
School officials searched the building, then put out a school-wide page. When the girl didn’t respond, they called her parents.

Principal Michael Turmelle the parents helped search for their daughter, called her cell phone and coordinated with school officials.

The principal said he’s upset at the number of people who have sided with the father.

“We all work so hard to give our kids a safe place to go to,” he said. “Any time we have an act of violence, it’s very upsetting because it is completely antithetical to what we’re trying to accomplish.” STORY LINK

Federal agents arrested several dozen employees in raids at 11 McDonald’s restaurants in northern Nevada Thursday as part of an ongoing investigation into illegal immigration.

Agents for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement made at least 56 arrests in Reno, Sparks and Fernley after serving 12 court-ordered search warrants at the 11 restaurants plus the headquarters for a franchise corporate office in Reno, agency spokesman Richard Rocha said.

“They are people suspected of being in the country illegally. As far as I know, they were all McDonald’s employees,” Rocha told The Associated Press.

The ICE has made several raids in recent months, including large ones at meatpacker Swift & Co., poultry plant Crider Inc. and leather factory Michael Bianco Inc

Ex-military to be denied gun ownership 2nd Amendment advocates warn it poses clear constitutional threat

The Gun Owners of America is launching an urgent campaign encouraging citizens to call their U.S. senators and ask them to oppose a bill that could be described as “disarmament by diagnosis.”

The legislation would allow a person’s right to own a gun in the U.S. to be permanently removed under a wide range of circumstances.

“You’d think that when rabid, anti-gun legislators like Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy join together to pass anti-gun legislation, it would raise a few red flags,” the alert says. “But these two New York Democrats are currently planning to roll over gun owners with H.R. 2640 – legislation which would bar you from owning guns if: You are a battle-scarred veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; or as a kid, you were diagnosed with ADHD.”

Gun Owners Executive Director Larry Pratt told WND that those are just two of the circumstances that legitimately could be used under the pending proposal to permanently remove an individual’s right to own a weapon in the U.S.

Someone in counseling during a bitter divorce, a child who at one point gets into a scrape on a school yard and is put on Ritalin, or even someone given “counseling” for issues such as depression during recovery from an accident or work-related injury are some other situations that could trigger such “disarmament by diagnosis,” he said.

The plan, described in Congress as an expansion of the Brady Gun Bill that requires background checks for potential firearms purchasers, would require people who have such a diagnosis in their health record to be permanently banned from owning a gun.

The plan would provide access to a multitude of medical records repositories for authorities to compile lists of people who have had such a diagnosis.

Pratt told WND Schumer is pushing hard for a consent “agreement” in the Senate so that the plan could be approved without further discussion and sent to President Bush.

“This agreement is extremely diabolical, as it would eliminate the ability of pro-gun senators to offer amendments which would clean up the legislation … and would grease the skids for immediate passage!” the alert said.

The concerns expressed by Pratt, whose organization represents more than 300,000 Americans, were echoed by U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, a Texas congressman seeking the GOP nomination for president.

“In my opinion, H.R. 2640 is a flagrantly unconstitutional expansion of restriction on the exercise of the right to bear arms protected under the Second Amendment,” he said. “H.R. 2640 also seriously undermines the privacy rights of all Americans – gun owners and non-gun owners alike – by creating and expanding massive federal government databases, including medical and other private records of every American.”

He noted the new information that would be submitted to a federal database would come from medical, psychological and drug treatment records that traditionally have been considered protected from disclosure under the physician-patient relationship.

“We should not trick ourselves into believing that we can pick and choose which part of the Bill of Rights we support,” he said.

It opens those who can make that determination – on someone else’s competency – to a “court, board, commission, or other lawful authority.”

That, he concluded in an analysis, could be a school psychologist, a psychiatrist commissioned by Medicare to evaluate seniors for Alzheimer’s, a Veteran’s Administration psychiatrist or a psychologist who for any reason involuntarily commits a patient “with no due process at all.”

A superior court judge in Washington, D. C. issued a bench warrant Thursday for Cindy Sheehan, after the anti-war activist failed to show up for arraignment on charges stemming from her arrest on Sept. 10 for disorderly conduct at the US Capitol, Fox News reported.

The warrant orders her arrest and delivery to the court.

Sheehan was arrested as US Iraq commander Gen. David Petraeus was delivering his report to the US House Armed Services Committee.

Sheehan and several other protesters including her sister were arrested outside the hearing room and were charged with disorderly conduct.

Sheehan was a fixture in Central Texas during presidential visits, but in May “she resigned” as the face of the anti-war movement she galvanized with her roadside vigil in 2005 and later said she would challenge US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her congressional seat in California unless Pelosi initiated impeachment proceedings against the president by July 23.

The deadline came and passed and in August Sheehan tearfully announced plans to run as an independent candidate. STORY LINK

HANOVER, N.H. - Sen. Hillary Clinton scored with a Democratic audience last night by contradicting her husband’s belief that a terrorist could be tortured to foil an imminent plot - but what observers didn’t know is she was contradicting herself, too.

“It cannot be American policy, period,” Clinton (D-N.Y.) told debate moderator Tim Russert, who asked if there should be a presidential exemption to allow the torture of a terror chieftain if authorities knew a bomb was about to go off, but didn’t know where it was.

When Russert revealed ex-President Bill Clinton advocated such a policy on a recent NBC “Meet the Press” appearance, Hillary Clinton won huge applause from the Dartmouth College audience with a deadpan comeback:

“Well, I’ll talk to him later.”

She may have to give herself that talk, too.

Last October, Clinton told the Daily News: “If we’re going to bepreparing for the kind of improbable but possible eventuality, then it has to be done within the rule of law.”

She said then the “ticking time bomb” scenario represents a narrow exception to her opposition to torture as morally wrong, ineffective and dangerous to American soldiers.

“In the event we were ever confronted with having to interrogate a detainee with knowledge of an imminent threat to millions of Americans, then the decision to depart from standard international practices must be made by the President, and the President must be held accountable,” she said.

Clinton’s campaign did not immediately respond to numerous requests for comment on the eye-popping contradiction.

ONEONTA _ A Level 3 sex offender recently released from state prison is living on Main Street in Oneonta.

Harry E. Maciejewski Jr., 50, was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse in Otsego County Court on April 7, 2003, for a crime committed in the town of Edmeston that involved girls younger than 10.

Maciejewski knew the victims, and the incidents involved coerced sexual contact, pornography and a computer, according to the state sex-offender registry.

He was sentenced to five years in prison and served 41/2 years before being released on parole.

Under the state sex offender registry law, Level 3 sex offenders pose the greatest risk of a repeat offense.

He is barred from having any contact with minors, is forbidden to drink alcohol and may not get a driver’s license, according to the terms of his release.

The shot, from the artist’s Thanksgiving series, was to be exhibited at the Baltic Modern Art gallery, Tyneside, this week along with some of her other work. But the day before it was due to be viewed by the public, police came and removed the image over fears that it might be breaking the law.

It is thought that one of the assistant directors at the centre called in the authorities last Thursday after a private view as he was concerned that the picture could be offensive.

The picture is now being examined by lawyers at the Crown Prosecution Service.

Officials at the gallery confirmed that the police were involved but refused to say who had decided the picture should be removed.

Venezuela - Actor Kevin Spacey met privately Monday with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, one of Washington’s most outspoken critics in Latin America.

Neither Spacey — who has won Academy Awards for roles in “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty” — nor Chavez spoke to the press after the nearly three-hour encounter in the presidential palace in Caracas. They shook hands warmly on the red carpet as Spacey left after a dinner with Chavez.

Hours earlier, the actor visited a $13 million film studio founded last year by the government to support Venezuelan filmmaking. Details were not released about the rest of Spacey’s itinerary.

Chavez has said Venezuela hopes to produce its own films as an alternative to the “cultural imperialism” of Hollywood. Yet, Chavez speaks highly of some Hollywood films.

Stephen Colbert, who for his Comedy Central show created a caricature of “The O’Reilly Factor”’s Bill O’Reilly, is being sued by a talk-show host from floundering radio network Air America.

In an apparent appeal to the Trekkies in his audience, the smirking satirist let loose with a joke in which he compared GOP presidential hopefuls to Klingons because of comments made at a debate in which the candidates said that it was more honorable to win the war than the presidency.

Colbert’s “Star Trek” wisecrack was unleashed on Sept. 11, and the co-host of the “Young Turks” radio show, Cenk Uygur, is alleging in a lawsuit that Colbert stole the joke from a show of his that aired on Sept. 7.

“Look, he’s messing with my livelihood,” Uyger said via his show’s Web site.

“That’s how I put food on my kids’ table. If I had kids, that’s definitely where I would put the food. Plus, my girlfriend won’t have sex with me anymore because she says I’ve lost my sense of humor. I told her I didn’t lose it, it was stolen. I looked it up, they have a legal word for it: It’s called loss of consortium. That means no more hanky-panky, and it costs big time in lawsuit world.”

For his supposed hanky-panky shortfall and hijacked humor injuries Uyger is seeking $65 million in damages. Apparently, he used a recent lawsuit over a pair of pants that were lost by a Washington, D.C. dry cleaners and prompted a local judge to sue for multi-millions.

The radio host plaintiff revealed how he calculated the hefty amount. “If a pair of lost pants is worth $65 million, then my jokes are worth a h*** of a lot more.”

US military snipers in Iraq are “baiting” Iraqis by scattering items such as detonation cord, plastic explosives and ammunition, and then ambushing and killing those who pick them up, The Washington Post reported Monday.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman declined to comment on the Post story, which reported such actions were being taken at the urging of Pentagon experts on special operations.

But Whitman did say the US military rules of engagement “certainly recognize and reflect the values of this nation.”

An army official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of secrecy rules, said he could not rule out that snipers were using bait such as detonation cords or blasting camps to lure out and kill suspected insurgents.

“This is not indiscriminate and there are rules of engagement,” the official told AFP.

“This is usually done in locations where people are looking to harm soldiers,” he said, suggesting the bait was left inside or on the perimeter of US military “locations” to target insurgents trying to steal ammunition and materiel.STORY LINK

A lawyer has asked the city of Aurora, Ill., to evict Planned Parenthood from its brand new 22,000-square-foot abortion facility because its occupancy permit has expired and “there is no legal right to occupy the current structure in any capacity.”

The permanent occupancy permit was scheduled to be issued for the opening of the new abortion facility today. But the city has delayed it while officials investigate alleged deceptions by the nation’s largest abortion provider during the permitting process.

As WND reported, the corporation created a front group, called Gemini Office Development, which acted as the developer and owner. In one case, the corporation assured city officials a tenant had not yet been selected for the new “office building.”

In fact, Planned Parenthood officials told a local newspaper they withheld the identity of the owner in order to prevent people from knowing an abortion facility was being installed in their community. READ MORE HERE

SAGGING PANTS OUTLAWED IN SEVERAL COMMUNITIES — BUTT POLICE ISSUING TICKETS…

It’s a fashion that started in prison, and now the saggy pants craze has come full circle — low-slung street strutting in some cities may soon mean run-ins with the law, including a stint in jail.

Proposals to ban saggy pants are starting to ride up in several places. At the extreme end, wearing pants low enough to show boxers or bare buttocks in one small Louisiana town means six months in jail and a $500 fine. A crackdown also is being pushed in Atlanta. And in Trenton, getting caught with your pants down may soon result in not only a fine, but a city worker assessing where your life is headed.

“Are they employed? Do they have a high school diploma? It’s a wonderful way to redirect at that point,” said Trenton Councilwoman Annette Lartigue, who is drafting a law to outlaw saggy pants. “The message is clear: We don’t want to see your backside.”

The bare-your-britches fashion is believed to have started in prisons, where inmates aren’t given belts with their baggy uniform pants to prevent hangings and beatings. By the late 80s, the trend had made it to gangster rap videos, then went on to skateboarders in the suburbs and high school hallways.

“For young people, it’s a form of rebellion and identity,” Adrian “Easy A.D.” Harris, 43, a founding member of the Bronx’s legendary rap group Cold Crush Brothers. “The young people think it’s fashionable. They don’t think it’s negative.”

In Atlanta, a law has been introduced to ban sagging and punishment could include small fines or community work — but no jail time, Martin said.

The penalty is stiffer in Delcambre, La., where in June the town council passed an ordinance that carries a fine of up to $500 or six months in jail for exposing underwear in public. Several other municipalities and parish governments in Louisiana have enacted similar laws in recent months.

Shop owner Mack Murray said Trenton’s proposed ordinance unfairly targets blacks.

“Are they going to go after construction workers and plumbers, because their pants sag, too?” Murray asked. “They’re stereotyping us.” STORY LINK

If you’re wondering who’s largely to blame for the alleged heating up of the climate you need look no further than Jane Fonda.

That’s what “Freakanomics” columnists Stephen J. Dubner and Steven D. Levitt suggest in Sunday’s New York Times Magazine.

“If you were asked to name the biggest global warming villains of the past 30 years, here’s one name that probably wouldn’t spring to mind: Jane Fonda. But should it?” the authors ask.

According to Editor & Publisher, the two cite Fonda’s anti-nuclear thriller “The China Syndrome,” which opened just 12 days before the Three Mile Island accident in 1979, as helping stoke “a widespread panic.” Fonda, E&P notes became a high-profile anti-nuke activist in an already-strong movement that resulted in the nuclear industry halting plans for expansion.

“And so,” the authors continue, “instead of becoming a nation with clean and cheap nuclear energy, as once seemed inevitable, the United States kept building power plants that burned coal and other fossil fuels. Today such plants account for 40 percent of the country’s energy-related carbon-dioxide emissions. Anyone hunting for a global-warming villain can’t help blaming those power plants — and can’t help wondering too about the unintended consequences of Jane Fonda.”

…COULDN’T FIND A SOLDIER TO KILL..

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - A U.S. citizen has confessed to using an axe to kill a Dutch student after failing to find a soldier to attack, his lawyer said Tuesday.

The suspect, Carlos Hartmann, 41, of Tecumseh, Mich., has confessed to the Sept. 8 killing on a train platform in the southern city of Roosendaal, defence lawyer Peter Gremmen said.

Gremmen said Hartmann wanted to punish the Netherlands for its support of the war in Iraq.

Hartmann appeared before a judge Tuesday and was ordered held for another two weeks for investigation.

“He hates soldiers, and says that the army kills people, so it would be legitimate if he were also to kill someone . . . from the American military - or from its NATO allies,” Gremmen said in a telephone interview.

When he failed to find a soldier at the Roosendaal train station, “he got such a crazy, disturbed idea that he killed a civilian,” Gremmen said.

Hartmann did not attempt to escape and was arrested shortly after the killing.

Dutch prosecutors confirmed that the suspect had confessed but did not identify him or his victim, in keeping with Dutch practice.

Under the Dutch legal system, Hartmann was not required to enter a plea Tuesday.

Prosecution spokeswoman Martine Pilaar said her office was taken aback by the defence lawyer’s willingness to disclose details of his case.

But Gremmen said he was only confirming details published by the local newspaper BN/De Stem. The paper’s source was not named, and police declined to comment.

“I was also surprised when I saw the paper; I thought, this must be coming from the investigation,” the lawyer said.

Gremmen said Hartmann has lived in the Netherlands since 2002, supporting himself with English editing work for a Japanese company, which he could do by computer, and that he had no fixed address.

He said Hartmann had consented to undergo psychological testing, and was now “terribly sorry for his deed.”

The victim, identified as Thijs Geers, was waiting for a train and had no connection with the suspect or the military. Online condolence registers in the Netherlands were flooded with messages of sympathy for him and his family.

BN/De Stem quoted a witness who asked to remain anonymous as describing Hartmann as striking the victim in the back of the head with the axe. It also quoted an unidentified family member from the United States as saying Hartmann has suffered from emotional problems since his early 20s.

“It’s a sad story,” Gremmen said. “But I’m glad he’s admitted what he’s done and that he’s sorry for it.” STORY LINK
