ONLY ONE MAN LAST NIGHT WAS PRESIDENTIAL November 29, 2007

Dear McCain Supporter,

Last night at the CNN/YouTube debate we saw eight men standing on stage, but only one man was a president. On issue after issue, John McCain rose above the bickering and gave voters straight answers with a winning message, raising the level of discourse.

The American people don’t want to watch round after round of “gotcha politics”. The selection of our next president is a serious matter, and it deserves to be debated by serious men and women who understand the stakes. While other candidates spent their time delivering canned one-liners, debating lawn care, and taking credit for stopping snow storms, John McCain took on the toughest issues with bold honesty and moral certainty. Instead of bickering about gotcha moments, he cut through the petty back and forth with a vision for America’s future in the war against Islamic extremism, fighting wasteful spending, reforming Washington, finding a real solution to border security and upholding American values. He did not equivocate, he did not rely on the advice of his lawyers and advisors; he spoke with a voice of reason and experience.

We are at a critical time in the election and in the history of the country. In 35 days, Iowa caucus goers will go to the polls. In 40 days New Hampshire voters will pick their candidate and in 60 days, our party will most likely know who the presumptive nominee will be. We have to do everything we can, now, to make sure that the nominee is John McCain.

The only thing that is holding us back right now is money. We have the best candidate, the best message and the best organization in the states. But we are competing with well funded and self-funded candidates - that’s why we need your help.

Your financial contribution at this time will go toward television, radio, mail, phone calls and field activity in the early states. Winning early and big is important, as the momentum will carry the winner through to victory. This is our strategy, and we need your help to implement it.

If you have not yet given, the time is now. If you’ve already made a contribution to our campaign, I would encourage you to make another one at this time. John McCain is doing everything he can to make sure we win while continuing to be the candidate who we can all respect. Now we need your help so that we can get his message out to voters.

As always, we thank you for your continued support - this race cannot be won without your help and encouragement.

Sincerely,

Rick Davis, Campaign Manager

A Unadilla man facing sexual assault and child-pornography charges was sent back to Delaware County jail Wednesday without bail to face grand-jury action.

Steven T. Hunt, 52, was arrested Sunday and charged with first-degree criminal sexual act, use of a child in a sexual performance and promoting an obscene sexual performance of a child.

The resident of the Sidney/Unadilla Mobile Home Community on state Route 7 is alleged to have photographed himself engaging in oral sex with a 7-year-old girl sometime in August or September at a home in the village of Sidney, according to court documents.

Sidney Village Justice Lamont Martin ruled there was enough evidence to show a felony may have been committed and allowed the case to move forward.

Martin also ruled Hunt, who is being represented by Marybeth Dumont, should be held in jail without bail. He was previously being held there on $100,000 bail. STORY LINK

Mark Penn: Buckling Under the Pressure of an Unfavorable Poll

All is fair in love and war, the centuries–old proverb states. Politics is not included, but given the way the game is played in modern–day America, maybe it should be. That’s the sense I had again this morning watching Mark Penn, the chief political strategist for Democrat Hillary Clinton, denigrate our latest Zogby Interactive survey simply because it showed his client in a bad light (Link to Latest Poll Number). Penn made the contention on the MSNBC morning news program hosted by Joe Scarborough (Link to Video)

Penn mischaracterized this latest online Zogby poll as our first interactive survey ever – a bizarre contention, since we have been developing and perfecting our Internet polling methodology for nearly a decade (Zogby Intreractive Methodology), and since Penn’s company has been quietly requesting the results of such polls from Zogby for years. We always comply as part of our pledge to give public Zogby polling results to any and every candidate and campaign that asks for them. What is interesting is that no other campaign has made as many requests for Zogby polling data over the years than Penn has made on behalf of Clinton.

Because Mark Penn is a quality pollster himself, we chalk up his contention that our poll is “meaningless” as a knee–jerk reaction by a campaign under pressure coming down the stretch. Several other polls – Zogby surveys and others – have shown her national lead and her leads in early–voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire have shrunk. This is not unusual. These presidential contests usually tighten as the primaries and caucuses approach.

ZOGBY TODAY: HILLARY BEHIND ALL REPUBS!! November 26, 2007

BREAKING HARD AND FAST!

Democrat Hillary Clinton would lose to all major Republican White House candidates, according to a hypothetical election matchup poll Monday, reversing her months of dominance over potential 2008 challengers.

The Zogby International poll was the latest sign that withering attacks on the former first lady were chipping away at her opinion poll leads just 38 days before the Iowa caucuses, the first party nominating contests.

In the new survey, Clinton trailed Senator John McCain 42 percent to 38 percent, former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani by 43 percent to 40 percent and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney by 43 percent to 40 percent.

She also lagged behind former Arkansas Republican governor Mike Huckabee by 44 to 39 percent, and former Senator Fred Thompson by 44 to 40 percent in hypothetical general election matchups.

Clinton’s top Democratic challengers Barack Obama and John Edwards however would still beat their hypothetical Republican rivals in potential 2008 contests.

In July, Clinton held a five point lead in the same poll over Giuliani, edged out McCain by two points and had a clear lead over other contenders.

A Rasmussen poll last week had Clinton also falling behind Giuliani in a hypothetical matchup of the November 2008 general election, and narrowly beaten by McCain. STORY LINK

Democrats like to define themselves as the party of poor and middle-income Americans, but a new study says they now represent the majority of the nation’s wealthiest congressional districts.

In a state-by-state, district-by-district comparison of wealth concentrations based on Internal Revenue Service income data, Michael Franc, vice president of government relations at the Heritage Foundation, found that the majority of the nation’s wealthiest congressional jurisdictions were represented by Democrats.

He also found that more than half of the wealthiest households were concentrated in the 18 states where Democrats hold both Senate seats.

“If you take the wealthiest one-third of the 435 congressional districts, we found that the Democrats represent about 58 percent of those jurisdictions,” Mr. Franc said.

A key measure of each district’s wealth was the number of single-filer taxpayers earning more than $100,000 a year and married couples filing jointly who earn more than $200,000 annually, he said.

But in a broader measurement, the study also showed that of the 167 House districts where the median annual income was higher than the national median of $48,201, a slight majority, 84 districts, were represented by Democrats. Median means that half of all income earners make more than that level and half make less. STORY LINK

Don Imus is hanging his familiar cowboy hat in a new television home: RFD-TV.

The radio personality, who returns to the airwaves Dec. 3 on WABC-AM, will debut the same day on the seven-year-old cable and satellite television station that caters to viewers with homes on the range, the Rural Media Group, Inc., announced Wednesday.

The radio show will be simulcast on weekdays from 6-9 a.m., and will be rebroadcast from 6-9 p.m. each evening, said Patrick Gottsch, founder and president of the Rural Media Group. The program will also be available to RFD’s nearly 30 million homes through on-demand services, Gottsch said.

Imus signed a five-year agreement with RFD, Gottsch said. An e-mail sent to Imus’ lawyer for comment was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Two weeks ago, Citadel Broadcasting Corp. announced it was bringing Imus back to host a New York-based morning drive time show. The cranky Hall of Fame broadcaster was fired eight months earlier after his “nappy-headed hos” crack regarding the Rutgers University women’s basketball team.

RFD, with studios in Nashville, has a mostly rural audience that receives programming like “The Cattle Show,” “National Tractor Pulling” and the “Largent and Sons Hereford Cattle Auction.”

“Don’s passion and understanding of rural America fits in so well with our ongoing effort to bridge city and country folks with this channel,” Gottsch said. His station launched in December 2000, billed as the first 24/7 television network dedicated to rural America. STORY LINK

IT’S CALLED THE FIRST AMENDMENT. LOOK INTO IT!

A  Lockport business owner is standing his ground, and the women in his family are standing with him, after a YWCA of Niagara official charged his company’s advertising is gender insensitive.

Richfield Street-based American Concrete had a new billboard erected Monday on West Avenue. Over the image of a wrapped gift, the solicitous catchline, “Wife need new shoes?” is accompanied by the American Concrete logo and a greeting, “Happy Holidays.”

The humorous inference to “cement shoes” or “concrete shoes” as a method of doing away with one’s wife is at the heart of the controversy.

What company owner Kevin McCabe sees as risqué spoof, YWCA Executive Director Kathleen Granchelli condemned as ignorant.

“I’m sure it was considered to be a joke, or something cute, but with the number of fatalities we see in the domestic violence field, it’s not a joke,” Granchelli said Thursday. “It’s in very poor taste.”

No, it’s not, countered McCabe.

“I think the mainstream understands it,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that some people are reading much more into it than they should.” READ MORE HERE

‘Global warming’ shocker – Who’s minding thermometers? November 19, 2007

Surface temperature recording stations a shambles, says veteran meteorologist

Dire “global warming” predictions are based on bad science from the very start, says a veteran meteorologist who found surface temperatures recorded throughout the U.S. are done so with almost no regard to scientific standards.

As a result of his shocking initial findings that temperature monitoring stations were constructed and placed without regard to achieving accurate recordings of natural temperatures, Anthony Watts set out to investigate the facilities used by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

What he found were temperature stations with sensors on the roofs of buildings, near air-conditioning exhaust vents, in parking lots near hot automobiles, barbecues, chimneys and on pavement and concrete surfaces – all of which would lead to higher temperature recordings than properly established conditions.

Aircraft parking within 10 feet of temperature sensor at Derby Field in Lovelock, Nev.

To qualify as a properly maintained temperature station, sensors must be placed in elevated, slatted boxes on flat ground surrounded by a clear surface on a slope of less than 19 degrees with surrounding grass and vegetations ground cover of less than 10 centimeters high. The sensors must be located at least 100 meters from artificial heating or reflecting surfaces, such as buildings, concrete surfaces and parking lots.

Watts’ concerns about the temperatures being used to gauge whether global warming is actually taking place began when he read a 1997 study by the U.S. National Research Council that concluded the consistency and quality of temperature stations was “inadequate and deteriorating.” Meanwhile, he learned, the U.S. Historical Climatological Network, responsible for maintaining the stations, was doing nothing to address the problems.

So Watts decided to take up the challenge himself. After surveying a few randomly chosen temperature stations and being shocked at the shortcomings, he set forth on a plan to survey all 1,221 stations, taking photographs along the way. With the help of volunteers, Watts has systematically surveyed one-third of the official weather stations.

The vast majority of the stations surveyed to date fail to meet the prescribed standards. Using a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 reflecting proper maintenance and standards and 5 representing facilities that are severely compromised, Watts says 70 percent of those stations surveyed received a 4 or 5 rating, while only 4 percent received a grade of 1.

All of the most egregious violations he has observed in the study would result in artificially higher temperatures being recorded. STORY LINK

DESERTERS LOSE CASE IN CANADA November 16, 2007

Two Americans who deserted the U.S. Army to protest against the war in Iraq lost their bid for refugee status in Canada on Thursday.

The Supreme Court of Canada declined to hear appeals from the two men, Jeremy Hinzman and Brandon Hughey, over decisions by immigration authorities — backed in two subsequent court rulings — that they were not refugees in need of protection.

Opposing the war on the belief that it was illegal and immoral, they deserted when they learned their units would be deployed to Iraq, and came to Canada.

If deported to the United States, they say they face a court martial and up to five years in prison.

Two opposition parties, the Bloc Quebecois and New Democratic Party, as well as a “good number” of Liberal members of Parliament, support the introduction of a special provision in Parliament that would let deserters stay, said Michelle Robidoux of the War Resisters.

GPS IN GOV VEHICLES CATCHES GOOF-OFFS November 16, 2007

GPS tracking devices installed on government-issue vehicles are helping communities around the country reduce waste and abuse, in part by catching employees shopping, working out at the gym or otherwise loafing while on the clock.

The use of GPS has led to firings, stoking complaints from employees and unions that the devices are intrusive, Big Brother technology. But city officials say that monitoring employees’ movements has deterred abuses, saving the taxpayers money in gasoline and lost productivity.

“We can’t have public resources being used on private activities. That’s Management 101,” Phil Nolan, supervisor of the Long Island town of Islip.

Islip saved nearly 14,000 gallons of gas over a three-month period from the previous year after GPS devices were installed. Nolan said that shows that employees know they are being watched and are no longer using Islip’s 614 official vehicles for personal business.

Some administrators around the country emphasized that the primary purpose of the GPS devices is not to catch people goofing off but to improve the maintenance and operation of the vehicles and to design more efficient bus, snowplow and trash-pickup routes. Among other things, the devices can be used to alert mechanics that a car’s engine is operating inefficiently. STORY LINK

ED NOTES: Time to get cameras and GPS into every public vehicle. We want to be Green, right? It’ll save the taxpayers a lot of money and fuel. Pussification of the Republic of Boulder continues - no more Valedic… er, Student Grade Leader People

Boulder Valley School District will end the valedictorian honor starting with the class of 2010.

The district’s high schools used grade-point averages to determine the honor, but the district’s top students were separated by just hundredths of a point - leading to complaints.
At Tuesday’s board meeting, officials heard from a district committee that recommended honoring high-achieving with summa, magna and cum laude honors instead of crowning a single valedictorian.
Boulder Valley had previously abolished class rankings to reduce “unhealthy competition.” STORY LINK

GOP FORCES SPITZER TO FOLD ON ‘NET TAX November 15, 2007

In a second major policy reversal in less than a day, Governor Spitzer is backing down from a plan to require Amazon.com and other online retailers to charge state and local sales taxes on all purchases from New York.

Yesterday, just hours after The New York Sun reported on the new revenue collection scheme, the Spitzer administration announced that it was burying it for the time being — at least until after the Christmas shopping season. The move saved New York City shoppers from having to pay an additional 8.375% on many Amazon.com goods.

“Governor Spitzer believes that now is not the right time to be increasing sales taxes on New Yorkers,” Mr. Spitzer’s budget director, Paul Francis, said in a statement. “He has directed the Department of Tax and Finance to pull back its interpretation that would require some Internet retailers that do not collect sales tax to do so.”

The turnabout came just hours after Mr. Spitzer said he was dropping his plan to allow illegal immigrants in New York to obtain driver’s licenses.

In this latest instance, Mr. Spitzer wasted little time before pulling the plug on another controversial policy, aborting it before it threatened to snowball into a distraction for his administration. STORY LINK

‘UNBORN’ TO BE DEFINED AS ‘PERSONS’ November 15, 2007

Colorado proposal would use loophole Blackmun created in ‘Roe’

Pro-life activists in Colorado have cleared a major hurdle in preparing an initiative for the 2008 election that would grant personhood to the unborn and create a possible confrontation to the 1973 Roe vs. Wade ruling that created abortion rights.

The state Supreme Court has granted permission for supporters of Colorado for Equal Rights to move forward with collecting the estimated 76,000 signatures needed to put the issue on the state election ballot.

It would grant personhood to the unborn from the moment of fertilization, meaning state and local laws protecting any individual life would be applied to the unborn. It targets a loophole U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun created when he wrote the original abortion opinion.

He concluded: “(If the) suggestion of personhood [of the preborn] is established, the [abortion rights] case, of course, collapses, for the fetus’ right to life is then guaranteed specifically by the [14th] Amendment.”

Several other states also are pursuing the same arguments, either through legislative efforts or, such as in the cases of Georgia and Colorado, through a process that would allow citizens to move forward with protections for the unborn.

Officials told WND the Colorado initiative would amend the state constitution in three places to redefine the term “person” to include those who are yet unborn.

The newest ruling from the state Supreme Court concluded the petition is a single-subject issue, as the state Title Board earlier had determined.

“We fully expected this positive decision from the Colorado Supreme Court. We are pleased that they supported the Title Board’s previous decisions. Plans to begin our petition drive are under way,” Kristi Burton, a spokeswoman for Colorado for Equal Rights, said.

Leslie Hanks, a longtime activist in the pro-life movement in Colorado, said the affirmation that all “persons” have certain natural, essential and inalienable rights including the right to life is exactly what the nation’s founders had in mind when they established the United States.

“Colorado, which regrettably was in the forefront of the movement to deny the right to life to millions of the unborn, has now taken the first step to restore the right to life to all Americans, regardless of age, dependency, national origin or condition,” said John Archibold, a founder of Colorado Right to Life as well as National Right to Life.

Former Colorado Gov. Dick Lamm, while a state lawmaker, wrote the nation’s first law allowing abortion, and it took effect after the Roe decision was announced.

Burton said while the requirement is for about 76,000 signatures to place the issue on the ballot, she expects organizers will collect in the range of 100,000.

“It has a really good chance. What we’re doing is defining life, at the moment of fertilization that is a human being, that is a person,” she said.

“Our whole goal is to protect human life in general, at whatever age,” she said. “I don’t believe that approach has ever been tried in Colorado before.”

She said the issue, if approved by voters, could establish what eventually would be a direct challenge to Roe vs. Wade, but she said she expects the influence of the abortion industry to be felt during the campaign.

“I don’t see there’s much they can do about collecting signatures,” she said. “But once we get those collected and it’s on the ballot, we’ll see the opposition.”

The personhood arguments, which have been around for some time, started gaining momentum after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled this year that the barbaric procedure known as partial-birth abortion can be restricted. STORY LINK

SPITZER TOLD TO BAG LICENSE PLAN BY ‘RATS November 14, 2007

Big Time Dem’s like Shillary have told the Gov to fuhgiddabowddit..

November 14, 2007 — ALBANY - With his poll numbers collapsing, Gov. Spitzer will pull the plug today on his controversial plan to allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.

The embattled governor will make the announcement as he meets today with the state’s heavily Democratic congressional delegation, which grown increasingly critical of the plan, his aides confirmed last night.

“The governor intends to withdraw his plan,” Spitzer spokeswoman Jennifer Givner said, confirming what several sources had told The Post.

spitzer aides said the decision was made because the firestorm over the issue was blocking the governor’s overall agenda, and there were serious concerns that various lawsuits, as well as threatened legislative action, would block the plan anyway.

There was also anxiety about the negative impact the issue was having on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign.

The decision to wave the white flag was cemented as a Siena Research Institute poll released yesterday showed Spitzer with his lowest approval ratings ever - with just 25 percent of voters saying they would support his re-election if the vote were held today.

One source said Spitzer had failed because he “just tried to push [the plan] down everyone’s throats.” STORY LINK

Gets 5-20 years for kiddie porn on ‘net

A former Army recruiter based in Oneonta pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to one count of distributing child pornography.

Michael J. Frascatore, 42, of Unadilla, faces a minimum sentence of five years in federal prison under a plea deal with federal prosecutors. Sentencing was set for March 6 in Binghamton, and he is being held without bail in Onondaga County jail.

Frascatore was the station commander of the Army recruiting office in Oneonta for several years and was working for the Army in Wisconsin at the time of his arrest.

Frascatore was named in an April 12 indictment charging him with five counts of distributing child pornography and one count of attempting to solicit sex from a minor.

Using a Yahoo! screen name combining a version of his surname with an obscenity, Frascatore had sexually-charged conversations over the Internet with a male police officer posing as a 13-year-old girl named “Amber,” according to federal officials.

Frascatore, who has been in the custody of U.S. Marshals since his April 5 arrest, appeared from a federal building in Syracuse during a video conference with Judge Thomas McAvoy in Albany. He admitted that on or about March 17, he transmitted five images of child pornography over his computer to an undercover Washington State University police officer. STORY LINK
