This afternoon a VFW Hall in Merrimack was also packed to the gills for the McCain’s appearance. It was standing room only in this hall (capacity 400) with voters pouring down the stairs and out of both entrances to the building. Those left in the cold including some reporters and McCain staffers resorted to standing in the parking lot listening through open windows. Lately, after events end, people have been walking away with lawn signs and at this Merrimack event many stayed behind and watched his press conference.

Among the onlookers was the Spierer family who saw McCain in 2000 but brought their daughter for the first time.

Mrs. Spierer is a registered Democrat but wishes she could vote for McCain, “because he has the clarity, the consistency, the strength. Even if I don’t agree 100 percent with everything he has to say I can trust him.”READ MORE HERE

Fred Thompson: ‘I’m not particularly interested in running for president’…

With the first primary contests less than a week away, Senator John McCain has gained a six-point lead over Senator Hillary Clinton in the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey.

A month ago, McCain had a two-point edge over the former First Lady. However, before that, Clinton edged out McCain by at least a point or two in six consecutive surveys of the match-up (see trend history).

The current survey finds that Clinton fares better in another match-up. She leads former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee 47% to 43%. Clinton has led Huckabee in six consecutive surveys with margins ranging from one to eight percentage points (see trend history).

The Senator from Arizona is currently viewed favorably by 55% of the nation’s voters. [compared to Hillary's 55 percent will-vote-against-her numbers ]That’s the most positive rating of any Presidential candidate in either party (see ratings and other key stats for all Republican and Democratic candidates). McCain also has the lowest level of core opposition among the leading candidates—just 33% of voters say they will definitely vote against him if he is on the ballot.

Arizona Senator John McCain finds himself on top with support from 17% of Likely Republican Primary Voters. In the muddled GOP race, McCain becomes the third person to top the poll this month and the fourth since October. But his lead is statistically insignificant–Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are just a point behind at 16% and Rudy Giuliani is two points back at 15%. After a recent trip to the movies, a state legislator from Westchester County set her sights on reducing the volume of theaters’ commercials and previews because she believes they are too loud and could harm patrons’ hearing.

Assemblywoman Sandra Galef, D-Ossining, has introduced a bill “trying to create a standard here in our state that the trailers and advertisements are at the same levels that our movies are,” she said yesterday.

Galef said that while at a recent movie at the All Westchester Saw Mill Multiplex in Hawthorne, she noticed how much louder the commercials and previews for upcoming films were than the actual film itself.

“This is not good for the eardrums, and it doesn’t need to be this loud,” she said.

Galef views the volume as a public health concern. Unlike watching television, the viewer can’t turn the volume down in a theater when a commercial is too loud, she said.

There are acceptable decibel requirements for many products, like lawnmowers, and commercials in theaters should be no different, the assemblywoman said. She had no data on the actual volume levels at theaters but was working on compiling them, she said.

There is no state Senate sponsor for the bill at this time. The Legislature reconvenes Jan. 9. STORY LINK

Republican presidential hopeful John McCain joked Friday that given his campaign’s ups and downs, he’s shown the stamina of the last man on Earth.

“I’ve been declared dead in this campaign on five or six occasions. I won’t refer to a recent movie I saw, but I think I am legend,” he told reporters, referring to the film in which Will Smith stars as the last man on Earth.

After watching his early lead in New Hampshire evaporate months ago, McCain is on an upswing, closing the gap with longtime front-runner Mitt Romney in recent New Hampshire polls.

“Somehow we’ve had a Lazarus-like experience,” McCain told supporters at his campaign headquarters. “I think it’s because I’ve been telling the truth. I’ve been telling people the truth whether I thought that’s what they wanted or not.” READ MORE HERE

As for Gore’s French followers, the author likens them to religious zealots who, far from saving humanity, are endangering it. When Carlos Sousa Jr. didn’t show up for Christmas dinner, his father called several of his son’s friends - including the two brothers injured in the tiger attack that killed the teen.

In reality, the three young men were either on their way to or had already arrived at the San Francisco Zoo, where they would later be mauled by a 350-pound Siberian tiger

After the zoo attack, authorities said, the brothers had refused to give their own names, identify the victim or initially give authorities an account of what occurred.

[...]Sousa said Thursday that his son and Paul Dhaliwal were close friends and shared a love of music, especially hip-hop.

[...] Both Kulbir and Paul Dhaliwal were charged Oct. 9 with misdemeanor public intoxication and resisting a police officer after they were arrested a short distance from their home while apparently chasing two men, according to court documents.

Kulbir Dhaliwal allegedly cursed officers and kicked the security partition between the back and front seats in a police car after being handcuffed in the Sept. 7 incident, the police report said. “The reports indicate they were extremely belligerent with police,” said Steuart Scott, the deputy district attorney assigned the case.

Census Shows Many Leaving New York

More people are leaving New York than any other state, new population estimates from the U.S. Census show, making it one of America’s most stagnant populations.

Experts blame the exodus — nearly 1.5 million people have moved out of New York since April 2000 — on high property taxes and fewer jobs, among other factors.

“Basically what you have is a high-cost state that isn’t producing a lot of jobs,” a senior fellow at the Center for an Urban Future, Joel Kotkin, said.

A middle-class population, which Mr. Kotkin said includes skilled blue-collar workers and families making $120,000 a year, is leaving the state because of a combination of high taxes and fewer available jobs, he said.

The Census study said New York’s population grew by about 1.7% between 2000 and 2007, and now stands at about 19.3 million people. The population has grown slightly, according to the data, because birth rates are higher than death rates and foreign immigrants continue to pour into New York City.

Experts warn, however, that the city and the state may be losing a generation of young professionals who are balking at the high cost of living in New York.

“It’s not the best scenario for a sustainable society when you are losing the bulwark of your society,” Mr. Kotkin said.

America’s fastest-growing states, according to the recent census data, are Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.

Roughly eight-in-ten Republicans (81%) say they are largely satisfied with the way things are going for them financially, compared with much smaller majorities of Democrats and independents (54% each) — the largest partisan gap recorded since the Pew values surveys began 20 years ago. A decade ago, partisan differences in satisfaction with personal finances were modest, and in 1994 Republicans, Democrats and independents expressed nearly identical levels of satisfaction with their finances. The partisan split is especially notable among Americans of mid-to-low income levels. Three-quarters of Republicans with household incomes of $50,000 or less say they are pretty well satisfied with the way things are going for them financially, compared with just 40% of Democrats and a similar share of independents (39%). Even among Republicans who say they often do not have enough money to make ends meet, nearly six-in-ten (58%) express satisfaction in the way things are going for them financially. By contrast, just 30% of Democrats and 32% of independents who have trouble making ends meet say they are satisfied with their personal financial situation.

Remove plune-wrapping from the scringe. Using the 7 3/4-inch extenulator, calibrate the number of inches spanning the scringe-gripper aperture on the MO-DOR scrambler. The ZVZ156 scringe must have a 14 7/8-inch aperture to successfully interflex with the MO-DOR picrochits. If the aperture exceeds 14 7/8 inches, insert and turn the soft-COR elasticized squiller. STEP 1:

First, insert the lithinode distrillitor pack into the scringe under the panel marked Varnicle Reflexelator Chamber. A flinged graffler at the bottom of the chamber will connect the distrillitor to the varnicle. Next, lower the scringe into the MO-DOR scringe-gripper aperture using the swigel-headed flonge to secure it onto the varnicle nodes, which conduct 20-zilihurtz magnifiers to the varnicles. Use the multipronged grallup to secure the pink wooplers to the orange varnicle nodes and the four triple-pronged green wires to the varnicle inhibitor. WARNING: Even one woopler-varnicle node misconnection will cause xurls to disrupt the scringe-view quorms once the framulator is plugged in.

STEP 2:

On the gridger board, align the zagenator, whindler and biceptor units 2.725 inches apart, calibrating the distance with the extenulator. Place the gridger board on top of the units and secure with 1 1/2-inch fribbets using the revolving spangler. Stabilize the units by installing fandles using 1 1/2-inch fribbets.

Go carefully; this is a narrow space: Attach the Spurgel-head grommel onto the wronchle prong of the multi-pronged grallup and position it directly over a fribbet.

Next, extend the revolving spangler to the fourth joint, attach the bludgger head and release the sping-grip. With your left hand, carefully lower the spangler and clamp the sping-grip around the grommel handle while turning the spangler speed valve to “rapid” with your right, and pressing the oscillator button with your other hand.

Illegal immigrants in Arizona, frustrated with a flagging economy and tough new legislation cracking down on their employers, are returning to their home countries or trying their luck in other states.

For months, immigrants have taken a wait-and-see attitude toward the state’s new employer-sanctions law, which takes effect Jan. 1. The voter-approved legislation is an attempt to lessen the economic incentive for illegal immigrants in Arizona, the busiest crossing point along the U.S.-Mexico border.

And by all appearances, it’s starting to work.

“People are calling me telling me about their friend, their cousin, their neighbors — they’re moving back to Mexico,” said Magdalena Schwartz, an immigrant-rights activist and pastor at a Mesa church. “They don’t want to live in fear, in terror.”

State Rep. Russell Pearce of Mesa, the author of the employer sanctions law, said his intent was to drive illegal immigrants out of Arizona.

“I’m hoping they will self-deport,” Pearce said. “They broke the law. They’re criminals.”

Pearce disagreed that the Arizona economy will suffer after illegal immigrants leave, saying there will be less crime, lower taxes, less congestion, smaller classroom sizes and shorter lines in emergency rooms.

“We have a free market. It’ll adjust,” he said. “Americans will be much better off.” READ MORE HERE

I love these kinds of articles! Here’s a trained, professional journalist (not sure if he’s made it to “elitist” status yet) whining about people like me; bloggers and other citizen “journalists” who are putting the squeeze on newspapers and others in the so-called mainstream media.

Mr. Hazinski, if you and your media buddies would admit to your biases, we probably wouldn’t be giving you so much grief. Your problem, generically speaking, is that you claim to be objective when nothing could be further from the truth. Just do your job to the best of your ability and we’ll do the same.

 What people resent is people like you telling us how screwed up WE are, or how stupid we are and how much we need trained and professional journalists such as yourself to steer us in the right direction. And then you whine when no one pays attention to you!

You know what’s great about the internet? It’s the unabashed free market at work giving readers more choices than they’ve ever had before. They have to sort out the bad from the good, and those with merit win out. Behold, a meritocracy!

Too many establishmentarian journalists are beginning to sound like agents for the buggy whip union.

Few outside the Naval Services know that the Marine Corps does not have its own medical branch. All medical, dental and religious care to Marines is provided by members of the US Navy assigned to the Marine Corps. These Sailors serve throughout the Fleet Marine Force, providing every sort of service, from routine sick call and first aid to major surgical hospitals equipped to treat all types of trauma.

“Twas the night before Christmas as I flew o’er the Marine Base,
when I spied a young man who seemed out of place.
His eyes showed compassion, his hair a bit long,
but his head was held high and his body was strong.

His air was confident, his uniform smart,
but what impressed me most was the size of his heart.
For he embodied honor, one of his country’s best,
and the words U.S. NAVY showed large on his chest.

As I stood there in wonder and gazed into his eyes,
the words that he spoke took me quite by surprise.
“What’s wrong Santa, haven’t you ever seen a sailor before?”
I sensed something special and longed to know more.

“To be honest, this field thing wasn’t part of my plan,
but God didn’t give me a boat or tin can.”
The words he spoke next surprised me all the more,
“But I’m as proud of my Navy as I am of the Corps!”

“Don’t worry Santa, that I’m a sailor you see,
for when a Marine goes down they will still call on me.
They will forget I’m a sailor, they’ll call in my stock.
At the top of their lungs they’ll yell, “Get me the Doc!”

“And I’ll answer that call, anytime, anywhere.
Though I know I’m a target I really don’t care.
I’ll face incoming fire as I race cross the land,
and use my very own body to shield a downed man.”

“Working long hours and into the night,
my unit’s battle is over, but I’m just starting to fight.
For the life of every Marine is sacred to me.
I refuse to surrender them to death, and in that I’ll find victory.”

CAPSULE REVIEW: 4 STARS A MUST SEE FOR ACTION/SCI-FI FANS. Loosely based on Charleton Heston’s classic Omega Man, this winner contains action-first frame through the credits. Many jump-out-of-your-seat moments. Will Smith is at the top of his game, never misses a cue. Don’t look for laughs, it’s serious action all the way. Fantastic effects and very believable NY scenes. If you’ve spent anytime in the Big Apple, the locale is strangely deja-vu, even without the vampire-warlock monsters. This movie has a very strong Deity message that is apparent in the final scenes

VIEWED: Hoyt’s Oneonta Cineplex, Southside Mall,Oneonta. Matinee price: $5.50. Before the movie even opened, we were treated to the return of Christmas in America –playing through the sound system was “The Christmas Song”, followed by Der Bingle’s timeless rendition of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas“, which always gathers my emotions as that’s the carol that takes me back to an R and R in Subic Bay at Christmas l969. How politically incorrect of Hoyts! Keep up the good work!

After the perfectly hideous coming-attraction trailers (7, of which not one movie appealed to me), here comes — GASP — an excellently filmed commercial (3 1/2 minutes ) from the Army National Guard, featuring scenes from floods, Ground Zero (of which the Walton ARNG 204 Engineer Battalion participated) and music from the rock ensemble 3-Doors Down. The song can be downloaded free at the Army National Guard recruiting site.

As the story opens, we find Will Smith, pedal to the metal, in a fire engine red Shelby Mustang GT500, racing through the streets of a deserted Manhattan, chasing a herd of deer and firing at them through the passenger window with a ’scoped M16 rifle. Not exactly the calibre I’d use for deer, but you use what you got when you gotta. And the actions continues non-stop from there.

Without adding spoilers, (you will want to see this film), Smith portrays Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville, NYARNG, and a medical doctor with his own laboratory in his basement off Washington Square.

A virus given to the world’s population has mutated into a killer -mad-dog strain, and he thinks he’s the last person left as somehow he is immune. Also inhabiting the world, though, are crazed populations of zombie-like killers which are fortunately killed by M16’s, 9mm pistols, grenades, etc. Good thing Smith is a Colonel and knows how to use such hardware. Here’s an MD, a soldier no less, offing documentless victims of their circumstance (nevermind the fact that they want to eat your brain). I’m sure the politically correct crowd isn’t liking this message. Neville is working to find a cure for the virus using lab animals and later, a human victim, though.

This movie is not for the squeamish. There are a few scenes of blood drawing in the lab, injections being given, shock value of zombies popping out of the darkness, more blood, but altogether not that much. It’s done in much better taste than the Tarantino movies I’m acquainted with. Still, some things are not for viewing by the easily offended or those with a weak stomach. Remember, it’s just a movie, and that’s not real blood, although the film is very real and I could easily believe many parts.

It’s hard to relate the next part without playing a spoiler to the film: there are a few scenes with a powerful “there is a God” message, and twice a crucifix is seen, and a prayer is offered. The final scene is a powerful reaffirmation and I can see why some liberal critics are panning the film for political purposes. Even the Bob Marley song used for the closing credits mentions God in a positive way.

Stay through the closing credits’s and listen carefully to the lyrics.

This film has been expanded to two of the eight theatres in Oneonta and is drawing out-the-door crowds every night, according to Tom, one of the managers of the cineplex. This is one movie you’ll be talking about at the water cooler.

My advice: See it soon. The sound is perfect, the scenes startling and shocking, and the action never wavers right up to the very end.
What the film has left me with: It COULD happen. If you can grow a human ear on the back of a mouse, and genetically alter animals so they glow in the dark, it COULD HAPPEN.

Laura Montero never thought her fun cruise to Mexico would end on a U.S. naval carrier surrounded by 3,000 sailors.

The 14-year-old owes her life to the men and women of the USS Ronald Reagan, one of the largest aircraft carriers in the Navy, who saved her in a mission worthy of Hollywood script.
Montero was aboard the Dawn Princess cruise ship off the coast of Baja, Mexico, Saturday when her appendix burst.

“It was a matter of life and death so it wasn’t very good at all,” said Montero’s mother, Trudy LaField.

The crew of the Dawn Princess put out an SOS, and the U.S. Navy heeded the call.

The USS Ronald Reagan was on a training mission in the Pacific Ocean 550 miles away and immediately dispatched two helicopters. STORY LINK
