“We Just Have to Slow Down Our Economy” to Fight Global Warming

January 31, 2008 9:26 AM

Former President Bill Clinton was in Denver, Colorado, stumping for his wife yesterday.

In a long, and interesting speech, he characterized what the U.S. and other industrialized nations need to do to combat global warming this way: “We just have to slow down our economy and cut back our greenhouse gas emissions ’cause we have to save the planet for our grandchildren.”

At a time that the nation is worried about a recession is that really the characterization his wife would want him making? “Slow down our economy”?

I don’t really think there’s much debate that, at least initially, a full commitment to reduce greenhouse gases would slow down the economy….So was this a moment of candor?

He went on to say that his the U.S. — and those countries that have committed to reducing greenhouse gases — could ultimately increase jobs and raise wages with a good energy plan..

Someone scattered human remains - including a severed head - in trash bags along the Interstate 80-380 corridor through Monroe County and into Lackawanna County.

Police said eight bags at eight different locations have been recovered so far. They’re not sure they have all of the remains.

The victim is believed to be a light-skinned adult woman, but police are not certain about the gender. An autopsy is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital Center.

Police don’t know when the remains were dumped. PennDOT crews discovered the bags along Interstate 380 as they were out treating roads in preparation for freezing rain this morning.

Bags were found along both north and southbound lanes of 380, as well as east and westbound lanes of 80. Police extended their search along 80 in Carbon and Luzerne counties. Remains have only been found in Monroe and at one spot in Lackawanna County.

A head was recovered along I-380, said Monroe County

University program features monologues by strippers, prostitutes and other sex workers… your standard mix of liberal arts graduates

The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., has given the green light to a student-run Sex Workers’ Art Show on campus.

University President Gene Nichol approved the controversial sex show in a statement that also said Nichols had tried to work with students to hold the event at an off-campus venue, the Newport News Daily Press reported Monday.

Students were unable to find an off-campus venue, however, and Nichol said the First Amendment and “defining traditions of openness that sustain universities” required he allow the show to be held at the college.

“My views and the views of others in the community about the worth or offensiveness of the program can provide no basis for censoring it,” he added.  STORY LINK

FIRST THEY CAME FOR PIGLET January 26, 2008

Posted by Commentator in Uncategorized.
add a comment

[...]Here’s another news item out of Britain this week: A new version of “The Three Little Pigs” was turned down for some “excellence in education” award on the grounds that “the use of pigs raises cultural issues” and, as a result, the judges “had concerns for the Asian community” – i.e., Muslims. Non-Muslim Asians – Hindus and Buddhists – have no “concerns” about anthropomorphized pigs.

This is now a recurring theme in British life. A while back, it was a local government council telling workers not to have knickknacks on their desks representing Winnie-the-Pooh’s porcine sidekick, Piglet.

As Martin Niemoller famously said, first they came for Piglet, and I did not speak out because I was not a Disney character and, if I was, I’m more of an Eeyore. So then they came for the Three Little Pigs, and Babe, and by the time I realized my country had turned into a 24/7 Looney Tunes it was too late, because there was no Porky Pig to stammer “Th-th-th-that’s all, folks!” and bring the nightmare to an end.

Just for the record, it’s true that Muslims, like Jews, are not partial to bacon and sausages. But the Quran has nothing to say about cartoon pigs. Likewise, it is silent on the matter of whether one can name a teddy bear after Muhammad.

What all these stories have in common is the excessive deference to Islam. If “The Three Little Pigs” are verboten when Muslims do not yet comprise 10 percent of the British population, what else will be on the blacklist by the time they’re, say, 20 percent?

Elizabeth May, leader of Canada’s Green Party (the fourth-largest political party), recently spoke out against her country’s continued military contribution to the international force in Afghanistan. “More ISAF forces from a Christian/Crusader heritage,” she said, “will continue to fuel an insurgency that has been framed as a jihad.”

As it happens, Canada did not send troops to the Crusades, mainly because the fun was over several centuries before Canada came in existence. Six years ago, it was mostly the enemy who took that line, Osama bin Laden raging at the Great Satan for the fall of Andalusia in 1492, which, with the best will in the world, it’s hard to blame on Halliburton. But since then, the pathologies of Islamism have proved surprisingly contagious among Western elites.

You remember the Three Little Pigs? One builds a house of straw, and another of sticks, and both get blown down by the Big Bad Wolf. Western civilization is a mighty house of bricks, but who needs a Big Bad Wolf when the pig’s so eager to demolish it himself?–Mark Steyn  STORY LINK

GAYS HAVE HISSY OVER CAMPAIGNS January 25, 2008

Few constituencies are as eager for the Republican Party to falter this political season as gay-rights activists. Yet as they observe the Democratic presidential campaign and the rest of the electoral landscape, their high hopes often are mixed with frustration.

Even as they expect to support whichever Democrat gets the presidential nomination, many activists are disappointed that the three leading contenders rarely mention gay-rights topics unless responding to a question.

“They don’t want to broach civil unions, marriage, equalizing benefits for same-sex couples,” said Jennifer Chrisler, head of the Family Equality Council, which supports gay and lesbian families. “The vast majority of politicians don’t lead, they follow.”

There are other frustrations as well. Activists were dismayed that the Democratic-led Congress failed to approve two much-anticipated bills late last year - one defining anti-gay assaults as a federal hate crime, the other prohibiting anti-gay job discrimination.

And at a time when they hoped to be making advances, gays and lesbians are on the defensive in at least two states - facing a likely ballot item in Florida that would ban same-sex marriage and a measure in Arkansas aimed at banning them from adopting children or serving as foster parents.

Prior to the New Hampshire primary, the Boston-based gay newspaper Bay Windows - which circulates across New England - was approached by representatives of several Democratic candidates seeking an endorsement, editor Susan Ryan-Vollmar said.

Instead, Ryan-Vollmar wrote a biting column asserting that none of the front-runners - Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama or John Edwards - had shown enough courage on gay issues to deserve the customarily generous financial support of gay donors.

“They’ve merely settled on what the Democrats have staked out as a safe, consensus position, just far enough ahead of where the party was in 2004 to give a sense of progress but not so far as to threaten Middle America,” Ryan-Vollmar wrote. “That’s not leadership, it’s poll-tested and party-approved pandering, pure and simple.” READ MORE HERE

COURT RULES SCHOOL CAN CHUCK LESBOS January 25, 2008

A California judge has ruled that Christian schools can set standards for behavior for their students, and impose penalties if they are not met.

The decision comes from Riverside County Superior Court Judge Gloria Trask, who found “no triable issues” on claims that a Christian school discriminated against two girls because of their perceived sexual orientation, according to a report in the North County Times.

Trask recently dismissed the claims made against California Lutheran High School in Wildomar by the two girls and their parents.

The case developed in 2005 when the girls, members of the junior class, were expelled after school officials noticed behavior by the two that may have indicated a lesbian relationship. READ MORE HERE

EDITOR’S NOTES: Well now there ya go, folks. The  14th Amendment works. The facts are: the girls violated a contract they (thru the parents) made concerning their behaviour. It’s a private school, a private contract, and they’re O - U - T. — Roger Thornhill

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VRWC January 24, 2008

[...]

On Sunday, January 27, 2008, our nation celebrates an important political anniversary. Ten years ago Hillary Clinton (then the First Lady) went on television with Matt Lauer and said:

“This is the great story here for anybody willing to find and write about it and explain it is this vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president.”

[...]The “vast right wing conspiracy” or VRWC lives on today, and is vast — it includes tens of millions of intelligent Americans who have been systematically marginalized, demonized and defamed in the public debate about America. It has voices because technology, tenacity and innovation gave it voices, in spite of those who hold most of the levers of power in America.

[...]The blogs that disassembled the plan to smear President Bush with forged documents about his National Guard service were open, not secret, about their findings. It was the blindfolded Leftist established press with its nonexistent research departments that yawned while the National Guard hoax was foisted on America a few weeks before the 2004 elections. The patriots who exposed the dubious heroism of John Kerry were slimed, not thanked, by the bureaucracy of Leftism which is CBS, NBS, ABC, CNN and all the other acronyms for mendacity. So, the term “Swift Boated” had come to mean something different from telling the truth, although that is precisely what the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth did.

[...]What has happened is that the Leftist media, entertainment and education complex is no longer monolithic. The immoral and dishonest behavior of Democrats can no longer be swept under the rug, only to be “discovered” forty years later, when it no longer matters. The VRWC is really more like BBC wireless broadcasts into a Europe conquered by the Nazis or Samizdat circulated in the Soviet bloc of Stalinist Russia. Hardly dominant, scarcely wealthy, filled by volunteers instead of paid hacks, the VRWC simply insures that all the news and opinions are not produced from a single hive.

[..]

The VRWC does, however, help protect the innocent. The Left quickly condemned the Duke Lacrosse Team, and it fell to the VRWC to insist that real justice, rather than collective social justice (you know, the sort of justice practiced in Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia) prevail.

What is the VRWC? It is the heart, soul and minds of millions of muzzled Americans speaking freely after the muzzle has been removed. It is the communion of these millions across lines of religion, race, gender and age who are bound by a common notion of what the American dream really means. The VRWC, unlike the monolith of Leftism, does not march in lockstep but rather as free souls brought together by the values of truth and decency. Happy tenth birthday, fellow members of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy! STORY LINK

NEW CITY, N.Y. - An ex-prosecutor and former PTA president who is also the wife of a suburban police chief has been charged with having sex, smoking marijuana and drinking with high-school-age children.

Beth Modica, 44, a former assistant district attorney in Rockland County and Queens, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to counts including statutory rape, sex abuse and endangering children.

Her hands were cuffed in front of her in court, where the indictment was unsealed. She later posted $75,000 bail.

Her husband is police chief of Spring Valley. He is “not implicated whatsoever,” Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said.

The 35-count indictment says that, beginning in July, Modica had intercourse with a 16-year-old, as well as oral sex with that boy and a 15-year-old. The judge issued orders of protection for the boys.

Modica, a former PTA president at Sloatsburg Elementary School, also is accused of drinking with many other children at her home and smoking marijuana with them in her car.STORY LINK

..to control threats of political fanaticism and religious fundamentalism

The west must be ready to resort to a pre-emptive nuclear attack to try to halt the “imminent” spread of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, according to a radical manifesto for a new Nato by five of the west’s most senior military officers and strategists.

Calling for root-and-branch reform of Nato and a new pact drawing the US, Nato and the European Union together in a “grand strategy” to tackle the challenges of an increasingly brutal world, the former armed forces chiefs from the US, Britain, Germany, France and the Netherlands insist that a “first strike” nuclear option remains an “indispensable instrument” since there is “simply no realistic prospect of a nuclear-free world”.

Reserving the right to initiate nuclear attack was a central element of the west’s cold war strategy in defeating the Soviet Union. STORY LINK

UK Health & Safety Executive forces local drama group to lock up their wood and plastic swords, register toy gun with police. Thanks, we all feel much safer now

A Cornish village drama group has had to register a toy gun with the police to comply with health and safety rules.

Carnon Downs drama group in Cornwall have also had to keep their plastic cutlasses and wooden swords locked up for the pantomime, Robinson Crusoe.

Producers of the show called the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) rules “farcical”.

A spokesman for the HSE said the rules were designed to make risks “sensibly managed”.
It gets a bit farcical when you are dealing with plastic swords
The climax of the show is a fight in which actors use replica 4ft-foot long plastic cutlasses.

There is also a toy gun which produces a flag saying “Bang”.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.
——————————
It has now been 18 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

List of 7 items:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent
Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

You won’t see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it’s too late!

The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson.

With guns, we are ‘citizens’.
Without them, we are ’subjects’.

During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!

Thirty year old Shaun Ford allegedly went into the West Side Market on Carolina Street in Buffalo with a shotgun and a mask. His get away car with license plate partially covered was waiting outside. Police say he pointed a gun at the owner and got more than he bargained for. The owner had a gun too. “He relaxed like he was going to cooperate and then when the guy raised the gun again at him, he believed it’s time to shoot, otherwise he was going to be shot at.” said Buffalo Police Lt. David Stabler. [...]

The owner was unharmed. As for the alleged robber, he left, not in his get away car, but in an ambulance after being hit at least once in the leg. He was transported to ECMC, and is expected to survive. “I think anybody has a right to self defense. Of course, we don’t encourage vigilantism, but these store owners or anybody else has the right be safe.” said Lt. Stabler. STORY LINK

PEACENIK SLIMEBAGS IN RETREAT-ADMIT DEFEAT January 17, 2008

After a series of legislative defeats in 2007 that saw the year end with more U.S. troops in Iraq than when it began, a coalition of anti-war groups is backing away from its multimillion-dollar drive to cut funding for the war and force Congress to pass timelines for bringing U.S. troops home.

In recognition of hard political reality, the groups instead will lower their sights and push for legislation to prevent President Bush from entering into a long-term agreement with the Iraqi government that could keep significant numbers of troops in Iraq for years to come.

The groups believe this switch in strategy can draw contrasts with Republicans that will help Democrats gain ground in November and bring the votes to pass more dramatic measures. But it is a long way from the early months of 2007, when Democrats were freshly in power and momentum for a dramatic shift in Iraq policy seemed overpowering.

“There was a consensus that last year was not productive,” John Isaacs, executive director of Council for a Livable World, said of a meeting attended by a coalition of anti-war groups last week. “Our expectations were dashed.”

The meeting, held at an office on K Street, was attended by around 20 representatives of influential anti-war groups, including MoveOn.org and Americans Against Escalation in Iraq, which spent $12 million last year opposing the war.
